Sophisticated Neutral Nursery: DIY Nursery Closet Plans | ORC Week 2

Sophisticated Neutral Nursery Closet mood board plan - Spring 2018 One Room Challenge - This is our Bliss

Seven days have passed and several small victories have been celebrated now that Week 2 of the Spring 2018 One Room Challenge is here! If you’re just tuning in, I’m due with our 3rd bundle of bliss in June and have decided to transform the littlest’s bedroom into a nursery for the new baby during the 6 week challenge hosted by Linda of Calling it Home. If you missed the Sophisticated Neutral Nursery before photos and mood board last week, check it out here! This is my 3rd time joining in the challenge as a guest participant and I do have to say, this is the most motivated and inspired I’ve felt. It’s probably no surprise, though, because not only is the deadline of the challenge looming, but there is an actual human making their arrival so the race against the clock is VERY REAL this time around!

While I don’t have a whole lot to show you today, I can tell you about our major victories this week…

1 – The wallpaper arrived!

2 – We landed on Sherwin Williams Nuance for the wall color… which is actually the same color I used in the Guestroom I revamped during my first One Room Challenge.

3 – We removed the wire shelving in the closet, moved all necessary items over to the biggest’s room since the 2 little guys will be sharing a room and pitched, donated or packed up the rest! Huuuge accomplishment in my book. Every Goodwill drop-off is if you ask me. Even just heading over with a single bag or box makes a difference!

4 – And the greatest win of them all is the fact that we survived an IKEA trip. On a Saturday. Without a complete plan to start. But ended up getting everything we need to start building the closet! We also managed to escape without 14 other miscellaneous “must-haves”. Why does that always seem to happen every other time while on an IKEA mission?!

The last nursery I worked on was the littlest’s back in 2014 and the closet was a huge component of the space. You can see the Nursery Reveal here, the DIY Closet details here and the Nursery closet accessories & organization info here! Although this nursery closet is going to have a bit different layout [and color scheme – no lime green here!] it is also shaping up to be quite a large project within the room itself. So, I decided to make the closet it’s very own mood board! Creating these boards provides an overall vision and then really gives me something to focus on if I start to get sidetracked. It is soooo easy to get overwhelmed and fall off track when working on these tight deadline room makeovers! Certainly, ideas change and the direction of the space can shift, but it sure is a great starting point!

Before I show you my design, let’s peek back at what the closet situation looked like before..

Then we removed the clothes and hauled them over to the biggest’s room…

And then we got down to the wire…see what I did there!

And now, a look at what I came up with for the Sophisticated Neutral Nursery Closet

THE MOOD BOARD

THE DIY NURSERY CLOSET PLAN

  • Take everything out and transfer must-keep items to the biggest’s room [we even removed the doors and started a mini makeover on big brother’s closet since we wanted to put the white dresser inside]
  • remove wire shelving
  • patch holes and sand
  • paint closet walls – need to figure out color!
  • purchase closet components – got most at IKEA, but have a few items we want to pick up at Lowes
  • install new unit, shelving and rods
  • order changing table
  • assemble changing table and place in closet
  • find baskets & bins for storage and organization
  • accessorize and style the shelves
  • fill drawers with itty bitty diapers and all the baby things!

I realize the above photos aren’t riveting, but now that the closet is bare and empty, all I can do is picture the sweetest little clothes hanging from what will be the new closet!

And that is motivation right there! Aren’t baby clothes so darn cute simply because of their tiny size?!

That’s all for our week 2 update, but next week I’ll be back with more progress and an update on where we sit with the room overall. Next week is the half-way mark. Didn’t we just start this challenge??!!

Thanks, Jewel! It’s almost like a challenge…see how many neutral patterns you can squeeze in and not cave and add color in somewhere!!
