School isn’t quite out for Summer, but you can bet that we’ve already started planning our Summer fun! We love to entertain year-round, but there is something about hosting an outdoor Summer party that gets me excited! Maybe its partially because we get so few months to enjoy the outdoors around here #midwestweather With the addition of our outdoor bar cart last year, our deck is one step closer to being party-ready. And to add some flare and fun, I decided to make a DIY Garland for the front of it! Today, I’m sharing How to Make a DIY Garland Perfect for a Summer Party!

This festive fabric garland was a cinch to make and only cost me $4! I scooped up my supplies from my local Dollar Tree and whipped this Tropical themed garland up in less than 10 minutes! That’s the beauty of these My Dollar Store DIY project posts. They are quick, easy and usually under $5 to make! With 3 little ones under foot, I don’t have the luxury of crafting away an afternoon like I used to.
But I can make a super cute party decoration if you give me a few minutes!
DIY SUMMER PARTY GARLAND SUPPLIES
- 3 lightweight scarves [I found darling tropical palm leaf fashion scarves at Dollar Tree, but here is a similar scarf and another similar scarf here]
- scissors
- pink raffia ribbon or twine
DIY SUMMER PARTY GARLAND DIRECTIONS
- Simply open up your scarf and lay it out the long way.
- Cut 4-5 inch strips of the scarf and work your way down to the end. I was able to get 15 strips of fabric per scarf.
3. Next, take your raffia ribbon or twine and tie a large knot about 6-10 inches from the end. Don’t cut your ribbon or twine off of the roll until the end.
4. Then, take your first strip of scarf fabric and tie it in a knot around the ribbon. Slide it down to the knot on the end of the ribbon
5. Repeat step 4 until you’ve used up all of your scarf strips. Tie them on tightly but allow enough wiggle room so you can easily slide the knotted scarf strips back and forth if you need to space them out further or closer together. The 45 scrap pieces tied onto the ribbon was the perfect length for my garland. You can adjust the spacing, the size of the strips or the number of scarves you use based on what you are going to tie the garland on to. A mantel would be another great spot for a DIY garland
6. Next, cut your ribbon or twine off of the spool and then make your 2nd knot.
7. Lastly, tie your two loose ends of ribbon to the ends of your bar cart, tape them to a table or hook them on your mantel to enjoy during your Summer party!!
So fun right?!
I loved the pink, green and black in the scarf. I knew it would go with all of my Summer decor! I’m thinking I’ll move my DIY Flamingo wreath to the back deck after it’s been up on the front door for awhile.
What do you think?!

I’m seeing the makings of a Flamingo Friday party happening right now! I know I’ve mentioned these parties before, but I’ll be coming back to you soon with the full details of how our neighborhood hosts a weekly Flamingo Friday party each week all Summer long! It’s something we look forward to each week that we’re in town. The first one is tomorrow and the kids can hardly wait!!
