Hey, hey out there! Happy Fall! It’s officially the start of the Fall season so I decided to bring out the mums and white pumpkins in full force over the weekend to share with you today! I’m joining Krista from The Happy Housie and 25+ other blogger friends who are all spreading some Fall inspiration into the world with our Fall outdoor spaces. I slightly tweaked our Front Porch from the Summer and have my tips for Easy Ways to Update Your Front Porch for Fall ready for you now!

After coming back home from the Better Homes & Gardens Stylemaker Event in New York City this weekend, I was pleasantly greeted with Fall-like temps here in Chicago. Now that the calendar AND temperatures read Fall, I’m coming in hot with a porch full of white pumpkins and pink and purple mums.
And I couldn’t love the girl-y vibes of this porch anymore! I always say living in a house with 4 boys, I have to sprinkle the pink [and gold] around any chance I get!
Most of you are cooling down where you live by now, right?!
I sure hope so!
This was our 4th Summer in our home which meant it was no longer acceptable to have such a meh front porch. We’d painted our front door and put planters on the porch, but that the extent of it. Until this past Summer, we decided to push the remaining front porch projects over the finish line. You can read all about our Front Porch updates in this post here.
After our porch refresh, what I was most excited about was being able to easily swap out seasonal decor. The foundation was in place, so a few tweaks each season was all the porch was going to need to be ready to go!
And now that my Fall tweaks are done, I’m going to tell you what quick and easy changes I made to get it Fall-ready!
EASY WAYS TO UPDATE YOUR FRONT PORCH DECOR FOR FALL
1 | CHOOSE A COLOR SCHEME FOR YOUR PORCH DECOR.
I knew I’d have quite a bit of green on my porch since my ferns and Summer planters were still doing so well. So I decided I wanted to bring in pink and white [mainly in the form of mums] and any other black and gold accents, too.
2 | PURCHASE MUMS AND USE PLANTERS YOU OWN OR SPRAY PAINT THE POTS THEY CAME IN.
Jewel-Osco had 8″ hard mums on sale for 3/$12 so I bought some pink, purple and white ones. A few of them came in black plastic pots, while the others were in teal or orange ones. Instead of buying new or hunting down old ones, I decided to spray paint a couple of them gold. I pulled the mums out and set them aside while I quickly spritzed the plastic pot with spray paint. Then, I rounded up a white pot and a black and white one to use as well.
It can get pretty windy, so the sturdier the pot, the less I have to go out and pick up tipped over flower pots!
3 | ADD SMALL BUNCHES OF MUMS TO YOUR CURRENT PLANTERS.
If your Summer planters are thriving, no need to ditch them for large pots of mums. Simply pull out any dead or wilted parts and replace with individual mums. I purchased four [2 white & 2 pink], 1 pint sized mums for $1.99 each and put one pink and one white in each of my large planter pots. Everything in my planter was doing well, so I shifted a couple things over to make room.
4 | TRADE IN YOUR LANTERNS FOR MORE WEATHER-RESISTANT ONES.
I had a couple of copper & glass lanterns on the porch all Summer, but when I found these rattan planters with remote control LED candles in them, I knew they’d be perfect for the Fall. They bring in some texture and warmth. And I also don’t have to worry about the wind and cold knocking the glass lanterns over and shattering them.
Lowe’s had them on clearance for $9 in mid-August, so I picked up two of them. These are similar all-weather lanterns and are on major sale right now too!
I hope they come out with a similar style next year because I’d love another pair for my back deck!
5 | SWAP OUT YOUR THROW PILLOWS.
We are still so in love with our cute little outdoor bench! It really is all that fits on the porch besides the little gold table I have sitting next to it. Oh and the Faux Fiddle Leaf Fig tree that temporarily sat in the corner. I told you guys I debated leaving it outside and buying a second one to replace the empty spot in the house. But I decided to save $$ and bring it back in.
I’ve since been playing musical rooms with the tree, so might end up buying another one anyways!
It’s currently in the corner of our Family room to the left of the Mantel I just decorated for Fall. But the hallway is looking sparse again. The black and white gallery wall needs a pop of green!
Oh yes! The pillows!
I removed the floral & citrus pillow with coral tassels and replaced it with a leopard one. It’s actually just scrap fabric tucked around an old outdoor pillow!
6 | CHANGE OUT YOUR DOOR MAT OR OUTDOOR RUG FOR A MORE FALL-ISH ONE.
I actually didn’t do this! But rather kept my “Hey There, Take Care” rug and the black and white striped outdoor rug we bought for the porch this Summer. My intention with these two rug purchases was that they were not seasonally specific, so I could use them on the porch year-round. I’ve been tempted to snag one of those darling “Hey there, Pumpkin” mats, but I’ve resisted the urge.
I’ll hang onto my current look for now, but maybe next Fall I’ll give in. 🙂
7 | REPLACE YOUR HANGING FLOWER BASKETS.
I found Fall greens in a low terracota pot at Costco and decided to put them in my hanging baskets. Since I kept the wire hanger basket with the mossy lining from my Summer flowers, I was able to use them again this season. I simply pulled the greens out of the pots and placed them inside the hanging baskets.
8 | ADD A FEW FAUX FLOWERS TO A PLAIN GREEN WREATH.
This is still that same plain wreath I used to make my Flamingo Wreath for Summer. I simply removed the flamingos and tucked a few faux stems in the same spot. I also tied a black and white striped ribbon at the top and that was it. Instant [free] fall wreath!
9 | PUMPKINS, PUMPKINS, PUMPKINS!
You already knew this one, right?!
I know that mums and pumpkins are pretty much Fall Front porch staples, but obviously pumpkins had to make the list! It was tough to find large white pumpkins this early in the season, but did grab 2 medium sized ones and 5 small ones at Jewel last week. I don’t like spending much on real pumpkins this far away from Halloween, but my guess is we’ll just add a couple of orange ones for the boys to carve and we’ll be set!
Have you guys seen any big white ones out yet?!
Pumpkins took over my mantel this year and now they’ve taken over my front porch steps, too. But my Fall heart is happy! I really haven’t done this much since our Fall Front porch several years ago in our old house. Although I had orange pumpkins and yellow mums, there was still plenty of black, white and gold.
Some things just haven’t changed!
