There is always so much to cover in a room reveal, that I oftentimes feel like I could come back with 2, 3, sometimes 4+ follow-up posts! So many of you readers first came to This is our Bliss when you were planning and designing your baby’s nurseries, after first sharing Simon’s Nursery Reveal. So after creating my 3rd baby’s room, I feel like I have a lot to say! Today, I’m sharing [More] Cute & Functional Nursery Closet Storage and Organization Ideas from our 3rd’s Sophisticated Neutral Nursery!
My plan is to do a 2 part Nursery Closet post follow-up. One on the storage and organization and the second one on how we actually built the interior shelving units, etc. Stay tuned for the DIY details!
CUTE & AFFORDABLE NURSERY CLOSET STORAGE AND ORGANIZATION IDEAS
In order to bring this DIY Nursery Closet to life, we first came up with a Nursery Closet Design Plan / Mood Board. After the initial design, we got to work by measuring, planning and building the interior of the closet.
As I mentioned above, I’m working on another follow-up Nursery Closet post with all of the DIY details – how we determined the specific dimensions and spacing for the different aspects of the closet, etc. But basically we built the closet around the size of the dresser [and the diaper genie!].
So after those details were decided, I started hunting for bins and baskets to organize all of the little guy’s gear!
It was time to add the finishing touches and bring the closet to life – the fun part!!
I wanted cute, functional and inexpensive pieces to fill with all the baby essentials and then add to the closet space.
LIGHTWEIGHT STORAGE BINS UP ABOVE
I found these darling black and white canvas bins to line up along the top shelf, which we filled with items we didn’t need to get at as often. For example: next size shoes, heavier blankets, next step toys, as well as various holiday & seasonal clothing items and PJ’s.
What I love most about these bins is that they are lightweight but still sturdy. In Simon’s Nursery Closet, we used plastic milk crates and while they worked out great, they were a bit clunky to pull down and put back up.
You can go here to see all of the closet organizational items we used in my middle’s nursery.
These have been the top selling item from the entire nursery! I chose to order a couple sets and alternate the patterns – ABC’s, polka dots and scallops.
The bold black patterns added an element of “pop” to the closet and tied in with the other black items in the room [the crib sheet – similar, the wall art and the floor lamp.] Plus the brown leather handles on the sides coordinated with the natural wood tones of the curtain rod, wood wall frame and round mirror.
STACKABLE BASKETS ON SHELVES IN THE “DEAD SPACE” ON THE SIDE
The sides of the closet were sort of tricky because we didn’t want too much wasted space. We put the changing table as far over as we could, while still being able to open the drawers. While it did leave some dead space to the right of it, we were able to add a couple shelves above the height of the changer.
I found these large, deep wire baskets and ordered 3 of them.
I lined one with diapers and put closest to the changer. In the other two, I put all of the receiving and swaddle blankets.
The baskets came silver, but I spray-painted them gold. #shocker They stack on top of each other which helps to fully utilize the open space between the shelves.
SMALL WOVEN BASKETS FOR THE MINI SHELVES
The middle unit is skinny and is only wide enough to fit the diaper genie at the bottom and these narrow woven baskets. I filled these with burp cloths, socks and excess / overflow baby items from the top dresser /changer drawer.
They are lightweight, but sturdy. I initially had little chalkboard label clips on the front of them, but after awhile they ended just getting in the way. I’ve been meaning to add different chalkboard labels that I can tie to the handle, but haven’t gotten around to it yet.
SPACE-SAVING FELT HANGERS
Of course I fell in love with these baby hangers because they are black and gold, but also because they are slim and anti-slip.
I highly recommend felt hangers for kids and adults! Clothes stay on the hanger and don’t slide off. I know you know how annoying it is when one arm hole slides off your plastic hanger!
I’ve upgraded all of T and I’s hangers over the last couple years [Costco offers the best deal I’ve found on adult size hangers] , but would still like to do the big boys’ at some point. Here are the kid size ones I’m looking at! But in all honesty, I might just go straight to the full-size since I’ve got three boys. Trust me, their clothes are anything but getting smaller 😉
SMALL CONVERTIBLE CHANGING TABLE TO DRESSER
This piece of furniture is sleek and modern, but also was the perfect size for our closet! It isn’t too deep and has a removable changer on top, so can grow with him. We put this changing pad and changing pad cover on top and then utilize the top drawer for diaper gear and other baby essentials.
The middle drawer holds his pants, shorts and pajamas and all of his shirts are hung up on hangers. And the bottom drawer has an extra crib mattress pad cover, crib sheets and changing pad cover.
I’ll have to snap a pic of the inside of the drawers to show you how I have them set-up & organized!
If you’re looking for a larger dresser with more storage space in the drawers, I highly recommend this one. Our middle had it in his nursery and is still using it in his big boy room as a 5 year old. I hate that their things just keep getting bigger just like they do 🙁
CUTE CLOSET DECOR
What I love about DIY closets is that you can change them and adapt them as you need. Once we remove the changer topper, the letterboard & string lights might come down so we can add another clothing rod.
For now, we are still loving the cute little messages when we come in the room. Here is what we put up for the holiday season last year!
We also still flip the light strand switch on if we need to do a middle of the night diaper change.
I added the peace sign art and mini plant for a touch of decor on the top shelf. But I can always add another basket if we need more storage space!
There are so many nursery storage and organization ideas out there. You just need to find the ones that work for you!
BABY CLOSET STORAGE & ORGANIZATION TIPS:
- find pieces that work in your space
- keep like things together
- put the items most often used within arm’s reach
- lightweight, but durable bins and baskets are great
- handles are helpful
- labels work wonders
- don’t ignore the insides of the drawers – use divider cubes to help keep things in place.
I love being able to come back and do a deep dive into all the details. It’s so hard to squeeze it all into a room reveal post without writing a novel. While I’m still working on the DIY Nursery closet details post, please leave any questions you have in the comment section of this post.
I will try to answer as many as I can to help you out with yours!
Now, I really should go tackle the two biggest’s closets. They could really use some organizational structure in there! 😉
Have a wonderful day!
