Today, I am kicking off a new Thursday series where I will share project ideas for using various items in new and different ways. On occasion, I get a semi-creative idea for how to use something for other than its intended purpose. When I have one of these “moments”, I will post about it here! I am by no means an expert on creativity, upcycling or repurposing, but I believe if you are drawn to something, but don’t know if and how you would use it, sometimes the best thing to do is take it home and let your creative juices marinate for awhile. It is easier to think outside the box when you are not forced to do so, like in the aisles of HomeGoods or Target. I have found myself doing this very thing and rarely does an idea form right then and there. Take your time and something totally unique and cool might come from it! You might surprise yourself.
If you follow me on instagram, you saw my very first #shelfie posted yesterday. A big first, I know 🙂 The little vignette I created on the shelf included a framed picture of our oldest in the tub, a small framed DIY art piece and a little brass owl. I asked if anyone could guess where it was from. No, not HomeGoods and no, not Target. Although both great guesses, I found this gold gem at none other than the Dollar Tree! The best part, aside from the fact it was $1, is that it is actually a mini coin bank!
I picked it up a few months ago and had it sitting on my desk. While shopping my house for items to use to decorate the upstairs guest / little guys’ bathroom, I spotted it and had an ah-ha moment. I went out later that day to run some errands and swung through Michaels to see if I could find a few artificial stems to place inside the opening. I found a 3-pack and headed home.
All I had to do was trim down the stems with wire cutters in order to achieve the look I was going for. It was as simple as that!
Up on the shelf he went.
The rest of the bathroom update is still to come! Oh and sorry for the wonky lighting. I am still working on how to photograph in a room with zero natural light. Please hang with me as I learn.
What have you repurposed lately? I would love to hear what awesome “outside the box” ideas you came up with, so please share in the comments below!
