How to Make a Statement in Your Dining Room

How to make a statement in your dining room - This is our Bliss

November is here and most of us are getting ready to host friends and family all holiday season long. And the most of the action will probably take place around the table! I’ve spent some time in my dining room over the last couple weeks and you guys! I’ve meant to come back and revisit my dining room ceiling ever since I revamped our dining room for the One Room Challenge! Today, I’m going to share How to Make a Statement in Your Dining Room and give you a closer look of ours!

Here’s a hint: Look up. 🙂

I realize this post is long overdue, but when our dining room ceiling remains the number one topic of conversation all these years later, I figure its worth coming back and sharing with you! When we decided to update our dining room we knew we had plenty of work to do. First up was to remove the red floral curtains, get rid of the yellow paint and remove the old chandelier.

We now had a blank slate and I had a laundry list of ideas! With a unique tray ceiling, I thought it would be fun to do something to highlight it’s features. There are so many different ways you can personalize your space and make it your own. We decided these three key elements would update the “5th wall” and create the statement ceiling I envisioned.

Here is what we did!

HOW TO MAKE A STATEMENT IN YOUR DINING ROOM
[3 WAYS TO GET THE LOOK]

ONE | CREATE AN ACCENT CEILING USING PATTERN

We did this by using a stencil, but there are other ways to add pattern to your ceiling, too, such as:

  • Stencil
  • Wallpaper
  • Free-hand or abstract patter

Although we went with a stencil, I love the wallpaper option! You can see how we’ve used wallpaper in our Master Bedroom, Nursery and middle son’s Big Boy Room.

We decided to use a medium gray color to play off the light gray walls and the black edges of the tray ceiling. I’m pretty sure a mixed the color using some small samples I had at home!

TWO | CREATE SOME CONTRAST BY USING AN ACCENT COLOR ON THE CEILING

As I mentioned above, we have a tray ceiling in our dining room giving us several different options for places to add an accent color. Since we went with SW Repose Gray on the dining room walls, we decided to add SW Tricorn black to one of the “trays” or thing levels of the outer edge of the ceiling.

The black creates contrast and almost outlines the patterned center. It acts as the trim and I love the boldness of it!

If you don’t have a tray ceiling and you don’t want to add pattern to your ceiling with a stencil or wallpaper, you can simply paint your ceiling with an accent color. A solid painted ceiling [in a color other than white] is a beautiful statement.

THREE | UPDATE YOUR SPACE WITH A UNIQUE LIGHT FIXTURE

Nothing will add pizzazz like an updated chandelier. Fun and unique lighting in your dining room will instantly create visual interest throughout the entire space, not just on the ceiling. The light will be the focal point of the room and if you do decide to zhush up your ceiling, they will work together to become a conversation piece.

I love the gold spikes, subtle crystal tips and the clear, round clear bulbs of this light. The linear design of the light on top of the curves of the patterned ceiling are such a beautiful combination. Its a slight contrast that still allows the other element to shine!

Here are a few of my other favorite sputnik style light options for the dining room:

My light and stenciled ceiling are the first 2 things people notice when they step into the dining room. And when you’re seated at the table, the glow of the light with the patterned ceiling above it creates such a beautiful setting to enjoy a meal together with family and friends.
