Wow! We made it! The last 8 weeks I’ve been chipping away at transforming our youngest’s boy’s room into a bold, fun, colorful and playful Big Boy Room and now it’s time for the final Reveal. These challenges are always just that, a challenge, but I’m always so grateful for the work I put in in order to get the end result. Here is our Littlest’s Big Boy Room // The Final Reveal.
If you’re just tuning in to this Spring’s One Room Challenge, then welcome! The ORC is an 8-week design challenge hosted by Calling it Home and takes place twice per year. I am participating in it for the EIGHTH time! It’s where hundreds of bloggers and content creators transform a space in our homes, share weekly updates, and then reveal the finished project at the end of the challenge.
You can see all of my ORC posts here and all boy room-related posts here!

I refreshed our Primary Bedroom in the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge and it was neutral and bold with a mix of luxe and warm, cozy finishes. This time around, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a kid’s space. I haven’t worked on one since I did our Middle’s Big Boy Room in 2019!
THE LITTLEST’S BIG BOY ROOM // THE FINAL REVEAL
5 years ago, I actually created a Nursery for our 3rd son during the Spring One Room Challenge. Fast-forward 5 years through a cross-country move from Illinois to Arizona in 2021 and getting settled into our new home – I decided it was time to give him a proper big boy room!
After all, his brothers both got their Big Boy Rooms in our last house around age 4/5 as well!
So after almost 2 years of our little buddy’s boring little bedroom with no flare or personality sitting untouched, I thought it would be fun to dive in.
I started with this design and shared it in Week One’s post.
THE LITTLEST’S BIG BOY ROOM: THE BEFORE
The next week, I popped in with a few before photos and after that, a few updates along the way.
Now I’m ready to share where we landed!
And here are the recent photos I took of his new digs 😉
THE LITTLEST’S BIG BOY ROOM: THE AFTER
I made it a priority to fill his room with things that represent him. Things that he loves right now, things that remind us of him and things that just genuinely scream his personality!
BIG BOY ROOM REVEAL: WALLPAPER WALL
The transformation of this side of the room really makes an overall impact to the entirety of the space. I started by putting up this removable wallpaper by Tempaper to create a light and neutral, whimsical backdrop for the other elements on the wall.
I’ve worked with their peel & stick paper numerous times before and it’s fabulous. You can absolutely transform a space in a day!
See the progress post here.
BIG BOY ROOM REVEAL: LOUD & PLAYFUL GALLERY WALL
I’ve loved the concept of a gallery wall for as long as I can remember. I love mixing different-sized frames in various colors and using a variety of art, photos, canvases, mirrors and more.
This particular gallery wall is fun, colorful, and beaming with his bright personality. Do you remember that disco ball art I shared in the mood board and again in the round-up of fun boy room finds? Well, when I realized the Etsy shop piece was only 5″x5″, cost $35 including $10 shipping, and would be delivered sometime in June, I decided to attempt to make one on my own.
This DIY disco ball art may or may not have its own post someday, but the short version of the tutorial is I started with this 8″ disco ball for $15 and a $2 wood art piece from Goodwill. With a couple of coats of black spray paint and some wood glue, I had my very own disco ball art for my little dancing machine man!
So fun, right?!
The other unique aspect of this gallery wall was incorporating these small acrylic wall shelves into the mix. On one shelf, I put the large thumbs-up figurine he’s had since it sat on his nursery bookshelf. And the other metal figurine is also something I bought for his nursery.
I found it at a thrift store while shopping for nursery décor when I was pregnant with him. To me, it symbolized his two older brothers always looking out for him.
I thought it was the perfect addition to his new big boy room gallery wall. And the acrylic shelves give the wall a 3-D effect!
This fun banana art because they’re his favorite, a colorful cactus painting to symbolize our new life in the desert, book art [that was originally in his older brother’s room] because he loves to read and his sonogram because he says it’s his favorite picture in his room 😉
BIG BOY ROOM REVEAL: CORNER READING NOOK
This hanging tent ended up being the perfect alternative to a hanging egg chair. And much less expensive, too! It comes in a ton of colors and is under $35.
I added this fluffy 4′ round rug and a bed rest / reading pillow from HomeGoods! [I found a similar and less-expensive option here.]
See all the details in this post.
BIG BOY ROOM REVEAL: A NEW BIG BOY BED
Last but not least, on the opposite side of the room, his bed got an upgrade. We ditched his crib in Illinois, so he’s been in a full-sized bed since we moved.
His mattress and box spring were just on a basic metal frame, so I thought a headboard might be nice! I actually found this inexpensive velvet channel tufted bed in black on Amazon. It’s a low-profile bed where the mattress sits on the frame without a box spring, but we love it!
After ordering this simple white duvet cover [only $15!] I wanted to dress up the bed with some color. I hit the jackpot with a ton of Amazon finds!
I used these orange throw pillows, this sunglasses smiley face emoji pillow, and this blue and white checkered blanket to achieve the look I was going for! And I borrowed the animal print ones from the Guest Room [they have traveled from every Guestroom we’ve had in the last 3 houses ;)]
I spray-painted the mirror over his bed a bright teal color and kept his white chest of drawers and gold touch lamp next to his bed.
Simple styling on the nightstand leaving plenty of surface area for bedtime books we’re reading and water cups! And in case you forgot I rearranged his room a few weeks ago by flip-flopping the bed/dresser with the bookcase.
I always knew I was going to wallpaper the wall straight ahead when you enter, but thought it was only fair he gets to lay in bed and see all the fun on the wall!
BIG BOY ROOM REVEAL: MISCELLANEOUS ADDITIONS & ACCESSORIES
The rug, bookcase, curtains, faux fiddle leaf fig and the dresser stayed [the one I had in his nursery closet and doubled as his changing table ahh!]. But I did end up replacing the ceiling fan with this gorgeous black and gold one by Kichler.
It has a wall switch to control the settings which include an on/off button and 3 different fan speeds. We love it!
Next to the closet, I hung a cheetah painting my dad made and a small little colorful cactus piece! The hat rack used to be in the middle’s room but we did some swapping when we moved in!
And that about covers his new digs. He is one happy little guy! When he walks in his room each day he still says, “Wow!!” He turns 5 next month so I’d say it was the perfect time to upgrade our almost-kindergartner’s bedroom.
A big thank you to my sponsors Tempaper & Kichler for providing me with such amazing products. And thanks to all of you for the support and following along. I couldn’t do what I do without you!
