Our June was one for the books this year! Not only did we just get home from a 21-day trip back to the Midwest, but we kicked off Summer with a trip to the beach the week before our flight to Iowa. We had the opportunity to spend a couple of nights at Pacific Terrace Hotel on Pacific Beach, where we got to relax and unwind by the sand and sea as a family. Soaking Up the San Diego Coastline: Our Family Stay at Pacific Terrace Hotel

If there’s one thing we’ve learned as a family of five (three energetic boys included!) living in the Arizona desert, it’s how much we crave the ocean breeze come summertime. So when June rolled around, we packed up the car, hit the road from the East Valley, and headed straight for the Pacific Terrace Hotel in San Diego—a beachfront gem that gave us the coastal escape we were dreaming of.

First Impressions: Coastal Charm and Ocean Air
From the moment we pulled into the circular drive and stepped into the open-air lobby, we were greeted with Hawaiian-style hospitality, a refreshing welcome drink, and views that made the long drive instantly worth it.

Located right on the edge of Pacific Beach, this hotel blends casual luxury with warm, family-friendly vibes. Think wood-paneled walls, coastal decor, and panoramic ocean views that are impossible to ignore.

The Room: Perfect for a Family of Five
We booked a Family Suite with a partial ocean view, and it was exactly what we needed. With two queen beds and a sleeper sofa, there was plenty of space for the boys to spread out after beach time.

The room had a breezy balcony where we sipped morning coffee while watching surfers catch early waves, and we appreciated touches like the dining table and mini kitchen set-up with a microwave and fridge for storing snacks and drinks.

Beach Days + Pool Breaks = Family Bliss
Let’s be real: traveling with kids means constantly switching between adventure and downtime. Pacific Terrace made that balance easy. The hotel sits right above Pacific Beach, with direct access to the sand and the boardwalk—so we could go from building sandcastles to grabbing tacos on the beach in under five minutes.

In between sandy adventures, the boys couldn’t get enough of the oceanfront pool and hot tub. We lounged in cabana chairs, ordered poolside drinks (hello, spicy mango margaritas!), and soaked in the laid-back SoCal energy.

Staff even handed out warm chocolate chip cookies poolside in the afternoon, which the kids are still talking about. The flowing Shirley Temples were a big topic of conversation as well!

Fire Dance Fridays: A Highlight of Our Trip
One of the most unforgettable moments of our stay? Fire Dance Fridays by the pool. As the sun set and the tiki torches lit up, the hotel transformed into a tropical evening experience.

We grabbed cozy blankets, settled into loungers, and watched the boys’ jaws drop as a real fire dancer performed right there on the pool deck.

The music, the flames, the energy—it felt like a mini luau under the stars. It was magical for the kids and such a fun, unique experience that made our last night feel truly special.

Pacific Terrace had a special menu that evening, so we enjoyed the Tropical Teriyaki Bowl with Steak and the Chef’s Chicken Skewers while we waited for the show to start. The flavors were incredible and since we had been smelling the delicious aroma of the grill all afternoon, we were happy to finally get a taste!
Location, Location, Location

We loved being within walking distance to so many family-friendly restaurants and shops. Pacific Beach is buzzing in the best way—with casual stops to eat, ice cream spots [we loved The Baked Bear – the freshly baked cookie ice cream sandwiches were out of this world!], local beach souvenir shops and places to rent bikes or boogie boards.

We were a short drive from La Jolla, but since we started the week off there, everything we needed was right outside the Pacific Terrace Hotel.
Our morning tradition involved throwing our sweatshirts and sneakers on for a trip down the boardwalk for a cup of coffee at Konos.

We ate breakfast there one morning and let me tell you – the long, winding line out the door was worth it! We had eyes bigger than our stomachs, but it was so yummy! We ate on the patio and soaked in as much ocean breeze as we could get – morning, noon and night!

We did hop in the car one day for an afternoon of fun at Belmont Park. San Diego’s iconic beachfront amusement park just off the boardwalk in Mission Beach.

The boys had an absolute ball and we’ll definitely be going back again on one of our next visits to San Diego.

Belmont Park is celebrating their 100th Anniversary all Summer long, so we sampled some birthday cake ice cream treats and more as part of their special celebration.

I’m planning to do a full blog post with the details soon!
Small Touches That Made a Big Impact
What really stood out to us was how thoughtfully the Pacific Terrace caters to families. From warm cookies at check-in [or poolside ;)] to sand toys available to borrow, the little details made our stay feel special. Every staff member we interacted with was kind, helpful, and genuinely welcoming — which can be rare in a beachfront boutique hotel. Honestly, the staff was some of the friendliest we’ve ever encountered!

Other details to note were the Kids Camp amenity complete with an in-room tent setup, twinkle lights, a stuffie and “fire” nightlight, which was a big hit with our 6-year old, as well as the option for poolside s’mores after dark! An extra sweet ending to an already sweet day.

Final Thoughts
For this Arizona family, the Pacific Terrace Hotel gave us more than just a break from the heat—it gave us memories. Oceanfront sunsets, morning beach walks, poolside giggles, and a fire-lit Friday night we’ll never forget.

We came home with full hearts, sandy shoes, and a promise to continue to take beach vacations as often as we can!

If you’re a family looking for a balance of comfort, location, and a little bit of luxury, Pacific Terrace might just be your perfect SoCal escape. We had the BEST time!
