Our middle’s bathroom makeover is ready and photographed! So today I’m sharing all the details of our Boy’s Sophisticated Small Bathroom Reveal! Between product shipment delays due to COVID, the hustle bustle of the holidays and contractor scheduling, this room didn’t come together until long after we originally anticipated. Come on in and take a peek at how it ended up!

BOY’S SOPHISTICATED SMALL BATHROOM REVEAL
There’s always something when it comes to house projects, but this one threw us some major curveballs!
We began Simon’s bathroom in the middle of Fall just after we finished the Basement Family Room for the $100 Room Challenge. You can see the bathroom before photos and design board here.
You can see the bathroom progress posts here and now I’ve got all of the details of the space ready to share!
BOY’S SMALL BATHROOM BEFORE PHOTOS
We’ve slowly been working our way through the bathrooms in our home updating them one by one. Most of them started with oak cabinets, dingy tile and dated paint colors.
In this small bathroom, we were working with yellow walls, peachy beige tile, oak vanity, 90’s chrome & crystal faucet and a cheap builder-grade light fixture.
Not to mention this wall cabinet that I’ve been itching to take down for years! Truthfully, it all needed to come down.
BOY’S SMALL BATHROOM DESIGN PLANS & MOOD BOARD
We wanted a neutral contemporary space and here is the design I came up with…
vanity light // mirror // vanity // faucet // toothbrush holder // toilet // kid art // “S” hook // linear floor tile // hexagon tile // niche tile // matte black shower fixtures // soap bottles
We knew we were going to update 90% of the space. The only thing that would remain was the toilet [which we replaced when we moved in in 2016] and the tub. Our middle guy is at the age where he likes to take a shower like his big brother, but does still enjoy a bubble bath every now and then.
Who can blame him?!

And here is where we landed…
BATHROOM TILE DETAILS
We replaced the old tile floor with this linear tile that I absolutely fell in love with. After installing a really unique mosaic tile floor in the shared boys’ bathroom last year, I knew I wanted something in here with unique characteristics as well.
The color is a deep charcoal gray and I chose a dark gray grout color as well to create even more linear dimension with very little contrast. It’s very cool up-close!
The shower walls were tiled in this porcelain tile with stunning gray veining throughout. And my favorite part, the midnight hex tile shower niche.
I shared a sneak peek in this post about selecting coordinating bathroom tile here!
Isn’t it cute?!
BATHROOM HARDWARE & FIXTURES
I went with a mix of black and gold fixtures – black in the shower and towel bar & hooks, gold faucet and knobs and then this fabulous black and brass vanity light fixture from Hudson Valley Lighting.
The big white globes attached to the sleek and striking black and gold bar was exactly the look I wanted.
Here you can see it with the lights off.
We found the simple white vanity at Home Depot and it fits the small space perfectly. It’s even slightly more shallow than the old vanity so we gained some extra square footage for our growing boy to stand and brush his teeth 😉
I swapped out the knobs for some leftover champagne bronze ones I had on hand. And to my surprise, I actually had an extra gold round mirror in my stash as well!
BATHROOM ART
The fun wall art is all compliments of Minted. I had been eyeing the “I WILL BE THE VERY BEST ME” art print since the very beginning of this project. The other 2 pieces are simple yet interesting. Simon is our middle boy [our #2] and always talks about the beach. 😉
And the abstract one below it pulls the neutral color palette together with simple shapes and lines. I’d love this one in a larger size somewhere else in the house!
OTHER DETAILS IN THE SMALL BATHROOM
How awesome are these black marble shower curtain hooks I snagged on Amazon? I love that they sort of blend right into the black waffle shower curtain and complement / play off the niche so well.
The shower curtain rod is the prettiest brushed gold tension rod and was also an Amazon Find!
I also love this little “GOODNESS” soap I found at Target. It looks like a sophisticated amber glass bottle, but is actually made of plastic. Perfectly safe from getting knocked around by a rambunctious hand-washing, tooth-brushing 6-year old!!
One other item I grabbed from Target was the rug. It’s a textured black and white striped flatwoven rug. The perfect size to hang over the side of the tub or place in front of the vanity to keep little toes from stepping on cold tile floor!
Having another updated bathroom in our home feels great and the “occupant” is quite pleased himself. Except it seems his little brother can’t get enough of it either!

Although it took a few extra months, I’d say we knocked out everything on our punch list!
Next up, the Master Bathroom ha! One of these days, we may tackle it. It would be the last of the 5 bathrooms to receive a little love in this house 😉
