They say “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and I wholeheartedly agree. Especially when it comes to hanging wallpaper on a 10 ft ceiling on a Tuesday night! But we didn’t kill each other either AND it’s done! Today, I’m sharing a sneak peek of our DIY Wallpapered Ceiling in the Powder Room.
It’s Week 6 of the One Room Challenge which means we’re closing in on the end of the Powder Room project. I’m tackling this space in our new home as a Guest Participant in the Spring ORC.
This room is the 6th space I’ve transformed over the years during this challenge. You can see all ORC posts here!

DIY WALLPAPERED CEILING IN THE POWDER ROOM
This is the 3rd wallpaper project in our homes, but the very first one we’ve DIY’d. Our Master Bedroom Accent Wall & Simon’s Big Boy Room accent wall were both hired out. I’ve taken on numerous other peel & stick wallpaper accent projects [Winston’s Nursery, a bookcase, etc.] but this time it was the real deal – with wallpaper paste and all!
I joked on Instagram that I wouldn’t be sharing a full DIY tutorial on the wallpapered ceiling and that’s still true. I will give you a general idea of what we did and then recommend you do further research on your own before attempting your own wallpapered ceiling.
There are tons of video tutorials on Pinterest and YouTube. I’m sure you’ll find some that are super helpful.
It was difficult, but we stuck with it and now it’s complete!
SUPPLIES WE USED TO WALLPAPER THE CEILING
- wallpaper
- scissors
- utility knife/blade
- ruler
- level
- measuring tape
- pencil
- 6″ foam roller
- wallpaper paste
- a positive attitude & patience 😉
Here are a few more peeks of the bold & feminine wallpaper on the ceiling…
It’s not perfect, but it’s pretty darn good and I love it! It was truly a team effort and I couldn’t have done it without T’s help. He was a trooper for sure!!
There is not a full DIY Ceiling Wallpaper tutorial, but I will share a few tips on things we learned through our own wallpapering experience…
TIPS FOR WALLPAPERING A CEILING
- Don’t try this alone – it was most definitely a 2-person job for us. We were either both on separate ladders at the same time or I was on the ladder and he was on the ground handing me supplies
- take your ceiling vent or fan covers off before wallpapering – I actually spraypainted mine black so they blended better in the space
- precision is key when measuring & making your cuts – everything has to line up front to back and side to side
- Cut your strips and line them up before you start putting them up. It will be very difficult to do once you’ve started adding wallpaper to the ceiling.
- Be generous when applying the paste. We found it was better to roll a good amount of paste on the ceiling before application because it dried so quickly. Maybe its the hot, dry climate here?!
- You can make minor touch-ups at the end with scrap pieces or paint if necessary!
I hope this helps even just a little!
What do you think? Do you like the look?
Would you attempt to wallpaper a ceiling on your own?!
I’m thankful to have that aspect of the room checked off the list and that our marriage is still intact.
