The end of the Fall 2022 One Room Challenge has arrived, which means I have a brand new space to reveal to you! The ORC never fails to throw a few curveballs your way, but nevertheless, the room is complete and I’m so thankful to have a finished space to start and end each day in. Here is our Moody Primary Bedroom Retreat!
Although I’m a few days behind schedule, I couldn’t be more excited to show you how things landed after working on our Bedroom for the last 8 weeks. I’m totally giddy after wrapping up the finishing touches, which included unboxing and assembling two last-minute shipments that arrived just before the weekend!
We were stretched pretty thin with a final soccer game, basketball and baseball championships, 2 concerts, and 2 sick kids, but I somehow managed to pull everything together in here and get it photographed to share with you today!
If you’re just tuning in, I participated in the Bi-annual One Room Challenge this Fall in order to take our Primary Bedroom in the new house to the finish line. We moved from Illinois to Arizona in July of 2021 and I’ve been working my way around our home adding my personal touch to each space.
This Fall I decided to turn my attention toward our Bedroom!
This is my 7th time participating in the ORC, so there are lots and lots of projects and Room Reveals in the archives.

A MOODY PRIMARY BEDROOM RETREAT // ONE ROOM CHALLENGE REVEAL
It wouldn’t be a full reveal without taking a quick look back at the before photos and design plans.
Remember the fairly clean slate I was working with at the beginning of the challenge?
PRIMARY BEDROOM BEFORE
We brought the nightstands [old guestroom], lamps [our bedroom], and bench [former dining room] from various rooms in the old house. We bought a new rug, dresser and this temporary platform bed frame last Summer, but that’s as far as we got. I knew I would pull it together a little further at some point, but we were totally fine with our current set-up for the time being.
Well, another ORC came around and since it’s hard for me to sit out, I knew our bedroom was a space that could use some my time and attention for a couple of months.
Here is how I translated my vision into a design board for week 1 of the challenge.
You can see all of the design board sources here
Now, are you ready for the after?…
A MOODY PRIMARY BEDROOM RETREAT // THE AFTER
There are so many new additions to the space and several pieces that are just making another appearance here from somewhere else. I’m thrilled the room is done and am proud of the work I put in to create this bedroom retreat.
It really is so nice to have a place you can go to relax and one you enjoy falling asleep and waking up in. Whenever I wrap up a room, I always pinch myself when I remember that it was my ideas and hard work that got me here.
And I am equally as grateful as I am proud that all of you are here cheering me on along the way. Thank you for your support over the years! You are why I am still here doing and sharing today!
ACCENT WALLPAPER
This was the very first project we tackled in the space and knocked it out on a Sunday afternoon. The peel & stick concept is truly my favorite type of paper to work with because it’s so forgiving. You really can’t mess it up! It’s easy to work with, quick to go up and the transformation is remarkable.
I can’t describe just how much the wallpaper changed the vibe in here. It went from plain and simple to an automatic wow factor. The Black Linen Grass cloth paper makes a bold statement without being too over-the-top.
I mean you have to love the look of dark and moody, but since that is exactly what I was going for, I’d say my dreams came true.
Seeing this wall makes me happy every time I walk into the room. If you’re looking for a quick and budget-friendly option to help you transform a room in your home, I can’t recommend this removable wallpaper enough!
You can see the full details on the paper, how we hung it, etc. in this post here.
SIMPLE CORNER READING NOOK
This little corner was the most fun to put together! I was fortunate to have the opportunity to partner with Wovenbyrd on this space and installed this Faux Shearling Swivel Chair and this brown leather ottoman in the corner.
They are such beautiful, high-quality furniture pieces!
I then added wall art, a floor lamp, and a side table to complete the nook.
It’s such a cute and cozy spot in the bedroom perfect for reading. The kids love lounging in the chair and chatting with me while I’m folding laundry or getting ready.
You can read more about the creation of the reading nook in this post here.
LARGE DIY ART FOR OVER THE BED
This is a project I still can’t believe worked out as well as it did! I had a vision for a large DIY art piece to conceal the two obnoxious windows over our bed and with the help of my dad, we brought it to life.
The art looks amazing against the wallpaper! And the color of the new-to-us headboard can even be found in the art piece, too. Which was a total coincidence since this bed was never a piece of the original puzzle. But I’m sure glad it fit in as well as it did!
All of the DIY details for this statement art piece can be found here.
CEILING FAN & AREA RUG
I didn’t know it was possible to love a ceiling fan as much as I love this one! It is satin black with gold accents around the light and on the blades. It has a wall control unit where the speed of the fan can be adjusted, the light can be turned on and off and the direction of the oscillation can be reversed.
It is such a high-quality ceiling fan and I’m so thankful to Kichler for gifting it to me as a brand partner in this challenge.
Another lovely addition to the room is this ivory & black rug from Loloi x Chris Loves Julia’s collection.
The bold pattern plays well with the abstract art piece and really grounds the space. It’s definitely a fun focal point!
WINDOW TREATMENTS
The plantation shutters were here when we moved in, but I wanted to add curtain panels to soften up the space and add some texture. I opted for these short side rods and simple black linen panels to frame out the ends of the window. I thought it would be nice to carry the black from the wallpaper across the room a bit.
Everything else is pretty light, so the contrast would help break up all the white and cream.
Hanging these rods & these panels was one of the biggest transformations in the bedroom aside from the wallpaper.
All the details on the curtains & rods can be found in this post.
NIGHTSTANDS & LAMPS
I waited until the 11th hour of the challenge to pull the trigger on new nightstands and lamps. But oh my goodness when they arrived last week, I knew I made the right choice! I’m keeping the old nightstands that were my in-laws, but these cane drawer nightstands were a fabulous replacement!
Not only do we now have 2 drawers instead of one large cabinet door, but we gained about 8 inches of width. It was a tight squeeze to even place a water glass and book next to the lamp on our old nightstands.
And speaking of lamps, I am absolutely obsessed with these gorgeous new table lamps. Pictures truly don’t do them justice! The rolled glass, the brass base, and the oversized lampshade are all beautiful elements of this lamp.
I found them on sale here.
DRESSER + FAUX FIDDLE LEAF FIG + SMALL WALL ART
And last but not least, a peek at the TV wall. I haven’t shown our new dresser much, but we are still very pleased with our purchase. It’s large, and tall and the hardware is beautiful. Previously we had a very dark 5-piece matching bedroom furniture set, so a new light and bright dresser was a welcomed change.
On the left side of the dresser, I house my perfume bottles on a small acrylic tray. This yummy reed diffuser and my ring holder also fits on it.
This faux fiddle leaf fig tree has been moved from room to room and house to house for years. It’s a great tree and has even been a top seller for a couple of years in a row. I elevated it by adding it to a new plant stand I recently found at Tuesday Morning.
After adding the curtain panels, the tree seemed too short and squatty for that corner!
And on the other side of the dresser, I added a gold tray, vase with pampas grass and concealed our cable box on top of a decorative box.
To finish off the wall in between the TV and the exterior door in the corner, I cut a couple rectangles from the leftover tapestry from the wall art project and added it to these cool frames I got on clearance at Hobby Lobby this Summer.
Since it’s an abstract art piece, the pieces look totally different, but the color palette is carried throughout the room.
A basket for blankets, a stack of a few of my favorite coffee table books and fresh flowers are the other styling elements I used in our bedroom.
That wraps up the reveal today. I hope you love it as much as we do so far! I’m already scheming how I’ll add some holiday cheer in here soon 😉
