Cape Rey Carlsbad Review: Beach Views, Pool Days & Family Adventures

There’s something about a week at the beach that just resets everything. Slower mornings, salty air, nowhere to be—and for our family, it felt especially needed this summer. Between sports schedules, work, and the everyday pace of raising three boys, we were more than ready for a change of scenery. Cape Rey Carlsbad ended up being exactly the kind of place where we could settle in, slow down, and just enjoy being together! Here is our Cape Rey Carlsbad Review: Beach Views, Pool Days & Family Adventures!

We spent a few nights here during our Southern California beach week in June, and it quickly became one of those stays that just worked for our family! It was our second visit to Carlsbad; the first time we came was in 2024!

Cape Rey Carlsbad Review: Beach Views, Pool Days & Family Adventures

We had the most amazing week in Carlsbad! I recently shared that we traveled as a family to the coast in California this month and I have another wonderful property to tell you all about!

Cape Rey Carlsbad was so many things, but warm, welcoming and the perfect mix of relaxing, with plenty of things to do all wrapped into one!

One of the biggest standouts right away was the Beach Butler service. Instead of hauling chairs, umbrellas, towels, and snacks across the road (which, if you’ve ever done it with kids, you know is a whole production), we hopped on the shuttle and walked onto the beach with everything already set up and waiting for us.

It was a HUGE bonus!

Why Cape Rey Worked So Well for Us

Cape Rey has that relaxed, coastal feel without being over-the-top or overwhelming. It’s not a giant resort, which we actually loved—it felt easy to navigate and never too crowded.

Our days naturally fell into a rhythm here: beach in the morning, pool in the afternoon, dinner and downtime in the evening. It didn’t feel scheduled or rushed, which is exactly what we needed.

Our Corner Suite: Ocean + Pool Views

We stayed in a corner suite during our time at Cape Rey, and it was the perfect setup for our family of five.

The extra space made a huge difference—especially with three boys. We had room to spread out, relax after long beach days, and not feel like we were on top of each other. It felt more like a comfortable home base than just a hotel room.

Cape Rey Carlsbad - This is our Bliss

One of the best parts was the balcony overlooking both the ocean and the pool. In the mornings, we could see the coastline and start the day with that fresh ocean air, and in the evenings, it was the perfect spot to unwind while the boys watched the pool below.

The design felt light, coastal, and updated without being overdone—exactly what you want in a Southern California beach stay. Between the views, the layout, and the extra space, it was a room we genuinely looked forward to coming back to each day.

If you’re traveling as a family, I would absolutely recommend booking a suite if it’s available. It made our stay that much more comfortable and enjoyable.

The Pool (aka where we spent a lot of time)

The pool was an easy win for our boys. Between swimming, the hot tub, and snacks, they were happy for hours—which, honestly, is always the goal.

For us, it felt relaxed and manageable. Plenty of space, not overly busy, and easy to keep an eye on everyone without feeling like you’re constantly “on.”

Cabanas and daybeds are available and a great poolside menu and bar!

Dining at Chandler’s Oceanfront Dining

One of the highlights of our stay was dinner at Chandler’s Oceanfront Dining. The ocean views alone are worth it, especially at sunset, but the food is what really made it memorable for our family.

We ordered a mix of dishes to share, and everything felt fresh, flavorful, and perfect after a long beach day. The calamari was a hit with the boys, and we loved the grilled avocado and shrimp ceviche—such a unique and light option that felt very “coastal California.” The short rib was incredibly tender and comforting, while the cioppino was packed with seafood and full of flavor.

It’s one of those menus where everyone can find something they love, whether you’re in the mood for something lighter or a more hearty dinner.

They also offer a daily happy hour from 4–6pm, which is such a great option if you’re coming back from the beach and want something easy before dinner. It’s the kind of place where you can just settle in, relax, and not feel rushed—which, with three kids, we always appreciate. The live music on the patio was great too!

The Location (what to expect)

Cape Rey is not a walk-everywhere type of stay, and that’s actually part of the appeal.

It sits just across from South Carlsbad State Beach, and while you’ll need to drive to places like Carlsbad Village, LEGOLAND, or even the beach, everything is close enough that it never felt like a hassle.

We liked coming back to a quieter, more relaxed spot after being out exploring during the day.

Beach Butler Service (worth mentioning twice)

This was easily one of the most valuable parts of our stay.

The shuttle takes you down to the beach, and when you get there, your setup is already done—chairs, umbrellas, towels. No lugging gear, no back-and-forth trips, no stress.

It made beach days feel simple again, which as a parent, you really appreciate.

Surf Lessons with Surfin Fire

One of the highlights of the trip for our boys was surf lessons with Surfin Fire.

Cape Rey can coordinate everything—including transportation to and from Stone Steps Beach—which made it feel really easy to add into our plans.

The instructors were patient, encouraging, and genuinely great with kids. Watching the boys paddle out, try something new, and cheer each other on was one of those moments you don’t forget.

If you have kids anywhere near this age, I’d absolutely recommend adding a lesson or even a camp day.

So Close to Encinitas (and Easy Meetups With Friends)

One thing we really loved was how close Cape Rey is to Encinitas.

We ended up meeting friends for dinner at Blue Ribbon Pizza, which was such a fun, easy night out. It has that relaxed coastal neighborhood feel where everything is simple in the best way—wood-fired artisan pizzas coming out of the oven, a casual setup, and that steady flow of pies that all looked better than the last.

We ordered a few different pizzas to share, and it was one of those meals where everyone immediately settles in—kids happy, adults actually able to talk, and nobody rushing to leave. It felt like exactly what you want a vacation dinner to be.

We also spent an afternoon at Moonlight State Beach, which ended up being one of our favorite beach stops of the trip. It has that classic Southern California feel—wide sand, easy access, and a really fun, laid-back energy with lots of families and kids everywhere.

Having everything so close made it feel like we got a little taste of Encinitas living without actually staying right in the middle of it.

Things We Loved Doing Nearby

Even though we spent plenty of time at the resort, there’s a lot to do just a short drive away:

  • Beach time at South Carlsbad State Beach (literally right across the road)
  • Walking around Carlsbad Village for shops, coffee, and ice cream
  • A day at LEGOLAND (always a hit with this age group)
  • Exploring Oceanside and walking the pier
  • Checking out nearby beaches like Tamarack

It’s one of those locations where you can do as much—or as little—as you want.

One of My Favorite Parts of the Trip

As much as I love the big moments of a family vacation, it’s usually the quieter ones that stay with me.

Each morning, before the boys were up, Ted and I would grab coffee and walk along the coast. No agenda, no noise—just a little time together before the day started.

It’s something we’ve come to really appreciate as our kids have gotten older. Those small windows of time that didn’t exist before.

And honestly, those mornings might be what I remember most from this trip.

Why We’d Stay at Cape Rey Again

  • Beach Butler service (shuttle + fully set-up beach days)
  • Surfin Fire surf lessons and camps with transportation included
  • Family-friendly pool and hot tub
  • On-site dining at Chandler’s Oceanfront Dining
  • Spacious rooms for a family of five
  • Easy beach access
  • Close proximity to Carlsbad attractions
  • Quick drives to Encinitas, Oceanside, and surrounding beaches
  • A quieter, more relaxed feel than larger resorts

Final Thoughts

Cape Rey ended up being one of those places that just made family travel feel easy.

Nothing felt overcomplicated. We had space to relax, plenty to do nearby, and those built-in conveniences that really do make a difference when you’re traveling with kids.

It gave us the kind of trip we were hoping for—time together, a slower pace, and a lot of really good memories.

And honestly, that’s what we’re always chasing when we plan these trips.
