We’ve made it to Day 7 of our 12 Days of Back-to-School Prep series! So far we’ve covered the fridge, my yearly refresh list, my drop-off-to-gym outfit, breakfast burritos, washing the lunchboxes, and backpack SOS kits — today we’re talking about one of the most requested topics in this house every single afternoon: snacks.

Day 7 of 12 Days of Back-to-School Prep: Grab-and-Go Snack Bin
Three boys means a snack emergency every single day, right around 3pm, without fail. So I finally got smart about it and stocked a bin with six make-ahead combos they can grab the second they walk in the door, toss in the car on the way to practice or rehearsal, or throw straight into tomorrow’s lunchbox.
These are the containers I use!
Why a Snack Bin Changes Everything
If you’ve got kids, you already know the after-school hunger is real — and it hits fast. Without a plan in place, “I’m starving” usually turns into raiding the pantry for chips, or me scrambling to throw something together while three boys hover in the kitchen. A stocked snack bin solves all of that before it even becomes a problem.

The other huge win here is that once the bin is prepped, I genuinely don’t have to think about snacks again for the rest of the week. One prep session, and it’s just done!
The Combos in Rotation
Here’s what I keep stocked and rotating through our bin:
- Strawberries, yogurt + granola
- Beef sticks [Costco], string cheese & cashews
- Cucumbers + ranch
- Diced green apple & peanut butter [we use the Kirkland Organic peanut butter from Costco] + yogurt
- Hard-boiled egg, cheese cubes & pretzels
- Blueberries + trail mix
I like to keep a mix of proteins, fruits, and something a little indulgent in the rotation so nobody gets bored, and so there’s something that appeals to each of my boys’ different tastes. There are limitless combos to try!
How I Set It Up
I use these clear bins so everything is visible at a glance — for me and for the boys. Each combo gets pre-portioned into small containers so it’s truly grab-and-go, no assembly required. That’s really the key to making this work: if there’s any extra step between “hungry” and “eating,” it’s not actually convenient, and the whole system falls apart.

The compartments are pretty small, so sometimes they want a second pack or they’ll just pair it with a banana or a handful of popcorn, etc. I like the pre-portioned sizes though, especially if I’m grabbing a snack pack for myself!
One Prep Session, One Week of Ease

This is genuinely one of my favorite systems in this whole series because the payoff is so immediate. One prep session on a Sunday, and I don’t have to think about snacks again all week. The boys know exactly where to look, they can serve themselves, and it’s one less thing pulling at my attention during the busiest part of the afternoon.

I restock with various combos, so let me know if there is one I should try!
