I love creating kid spaces in our home! There are many ways to showcase all of the wonderful traits that make your child unique by creating a space that truly highlights their personality. Since I’m currently in the middle of “Operation: give our little guy his first big boy room”, I rounded up a ton of fun finds I’d consider using in his space. If you’re looking for any kid room inspo, today I’m sharing my tips for How to Add Personality to a Boy’s Room.
Week 3 of the One Room Challenge is here and while I don’t have any true progress to share yet, there are many bricks being laid behind the scenes. Sourcing, ordering and the waiting game is the reality when it comes to this challenge. I should have something really fun and exciting to show you next week, though!

Last week, I shared the Big Boy Room design. And the week before I shared the before photos of my littlest’s room.
And this week, is a better look at some funky finds I may use and ways you can infuse some personality into your own child’s room.
How to Add Personality to a Boy’s Room
3-D disco ball wall art // Gummy Bear light // rocket ship pillow // hanging wicker chair // ice cream cone laundry hamper // canopy // letter pillow // smiley face pillow // crown neon sign // personalized name neon sign // octopus wall hanging // thumbs up wall hooks // acrylic wall storage
Here are ways to incorporate the fun finds [and more] from above into your boy’s space.
ADD FUN PILLOWS TO THE BED OR ACCENT CHAIR
I can’t resist adding a quirky little pillow to the front of the bed or placed on a chair or bench. One of my favorites was this headphone-shaped pillow I used in Simon’s big boy room. He has always loved music so this was a nod to his love for a good beat.
This smiley face pillow, this rocket pillow, this baseball pillow or even an initial pillow [under $20!] are all awesome options and will definitely add a pop of personality to their digs.
PUT IN UNIQUE LIGHTING
Maybe it’s just a small accent light, like how cute is this gummy bear nightlight?! This nightlight/ceiling projector is a favorite in our house.
USE INTERESTING WALL DISPLAYS IN PLACE OF ART
I adore these “thumbs up” wall hooks! and this octopus wall decor is darling, too. [many other creatures are available here!] You may remember this 3-D disco ball from my mood board. I am still a big fan and will probably end up purchasing it for Winston’s room.
Want some functionality to go along with the personality?!
Try this acrylic wall pocket for storing toys, stuffed animals or displaying a collection of some sort.
HANG SOMETHING FROM THE CEILING!
like a chair or canopy!! I shared the black wicker hanging chair last week and think it is FABULOUS! But a cute canopy or tent is another option to fill an empty corner.
THRIFT OR DIY SOMETHING ORIGINAL
For those of you who have been here with me since the beginning remember the nursery I was working on when I first started my blog. It was 9 years ago as we were preparing a second nursery for our second boy, [now our middle boy!]
The entire nursery was filled with DIY decor, which was the majority of my blog content back then. From the Marquee Initial Sign to the Pegboard Gallery wall to the Nursery Mobile and each little DIY in between, I created a space unlike any other nursery. You couldn’t just go out and buy the pieces in his room.
It was all custom because I made it all!
It was special and unique and one of my very favorite rooms to date! I hope he knows someday all of the time, attention love that went into creating that space for him.
I also love the idea of thrifting unique decor to add to a bookcase or shelf. When working on baby #3’s nursery, I stumbled upon this metal piece at the local thrift store. It just spoke to me, so I bought it and placed it on the top of his bookshelf when I got home.
It symbolizes his 2 older brothers always there with him to watch over and protect him.
We still have that piece in his room. It currently sits on his nightstand and we often chat about it at bedtime. It’s something that will always stay in his room.
NEON LIGHTS ARE ALWAYS A WIN
What kid wouldn’t be obsessed with a neon sign above their bed or desk?! A cute saying like “chill“, “you got this” or a king’s crown is super cool. A custom neon sign personalized with their name [this style or this style] would also make a darling addition to their big boy room.
UTILIZE FUN-CTIONAL STORAGE OPTIONS
Ok, I still can’t get over this ice cream cone laundry hamper. What kid wouldn’t dig that?! Not sure it will help them actually use it, but it’s a nice thought!
OTHER WAYS TO ADD PERSONALITY TO YOUR BOY’S ROOM
Using color, pattern, wallpaper, a funky rug, ceiling accents, etc. are a few other ways to amp up the fun factor when creating a space for your child. Whether it’s a nursery, playroom, big boy room or teen hangout, there are a ton of ways to make their space look and feel like them!
