I’m finally back with the design for the biggest’s tween boy room! It seems silly to call it a tween room when he’s going to be 13 next year, but I refuse to call him a TEEN yet! I’m a bit behind in this One Room Challenge but I’m plowing ahead at full steam to get this room wrapped up and revealed before Thanksgiving! Here is my Tween Boy Room Refresh Design!
If you’re just tuning in, then welcome! This is my 2nd official post in the Fall 2024 One Room Challenge! I have some ground to cover so you’ll probably see a few extra posts published between now and the reveal in 10 days!
I’ve joined Linda from Calling it Home as she hosts a bi-annual 8-week room transformation challenge. This is the 9th one I participated in. You can see all of my past ORC projects here!

TWEEN BOY ROOM REFRESH // FALL 2024 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE
At the start of this Fall’s challenge, I shared the before photos of my oldest son’s room and today I’m sharing my design ideas for the space. He is 12 years old and in his first year of Junior High School as a 7th grader. We moved into our home in Arizona from Illinois 3 years ago, but didn’t do anything other than plop the boys’ old furniture in their rooms and call it a day!
We refreshed the littlest’s room last year by giving him a proper Big Boy Room since we ditched his crib/toddler bed in the move. He got a big boy bed, but didn’t get to experience the fun transition from a nursery to a kid room until then. You can see the Room Reveal here.
FINALLY NOT IGNORING THE BASEMENT BOY ROOM[S]!
The 2 older boys’ rooms are located in the basement and while I’ll call it the frat house until the end of time, I decided I couldn’t completely ignore their spaces forever. Since Henry started 7th grade this year and will soon be a teenager, I figured he deserved to be next on the list for a room zhush. I want his new space to feel sophisticated, but comfortable, with room to grow into it. While I don’t plan to redo his room every couple of years, I do fully expect his taste, preferences, hobbies, etc. to shift over the next few years as he approaches high school and throughout those pivotal four years.
That being said, I’m not going overboard this go-round, so I’m really leaning into the term refresh. Using much of what he already has, but editing it and bringing in a few key additions.
With a fresh coat of paint, a couple of new furniture pieces, some pillow swaps and new wall decor showcasing some of his favorite sports & hobbies, I think his room will be perfectly refreshed and just right for this new tween/teen chapter.
Here is my vision for the space and below that I’ll share what I plan to do to achieve the look…

Even though I’m running behind on this project, we did make some significant progress in the last 2 weeks. My dad & I built the headboard, the new ceiling fan was installed last week, the room was painted yesterday and the wallpaper was delivered earlier this week.
